Barbie in India, Expressions of India Barbie – czyli Mattel w Indiach

Najgorszą rzeczą w moim zbieraniu lalek jest fakt, że najchętniej zgromadziłabym wszystko. Cokolwiek mi sie spodoba…lub bardzo nie spodoba…lub jest całkowicie inne, niż pozostałe lalki…w sposob naturalny znajduje się na mojej liście życzeń – oznacza to chaotyczny rozrost zbioru w kierunkach czasem nieprzewidywalnych.

Nie mogłam zatem przeoczyć lalek Mattela produkowanych na rynki inne niż Amerykański i Europejski. Sama historia rozmaitych spółek zawieranych przez Mattel z lokalnymi firmami w bardzo egzotycznych krajach jest fascynująca.

Dziś przedstawię Barbie wyprodukowaną w Indiach.

The worst thing about being a doll collector is – I’d like to collect everything. Everything I like, everything I don’t like, or anything that makes a doll different – it all finds its natural place on my wishlist, and means a chaotic growth of my collection in unexpected directions.

Today I will introduce a Barbie made in India

Therefore I couldn’t ignore Mattel’s dolls produced for the rest of the world, aside from America and Europe. Even the history of Mattel’s business dealings with local companies in exotic countries is fascinating.

BARBIE IN INDIA

Mattel wkroczył na rynek indyjski w 1988 roku i założył spółkę joint venture (60 do 40) z indyjską firmą BlowPlast, tworząc LEO-Mattel. Efektem współpracy były  lalki Barbie, produkowane w całości w Indiach oraz  indyjska seria samochodzików Hot-Wheels.

Powstała w ten sposób – między innymi – indyjska wersja Heart Family, sygnowana na pudełku logo spółki LEO Mattel.

W 1993 roku Leo Mattel rozpoczyna produkcję serii Barbie in India –  są to Barbie dostępne wyłącznie na rynku indyjskim, ubrane w sari.

(dowiedziałam się o ich istnieniu już w 1994 roku- ponieważ siostrzenica mojej koleżanki dostała taką od wujka-podróżnika).

Mattel entered the Indian market in 1988 and created a joint-venture (60-40) with the local company BlowPlast, creating LEO-Mattel. Thanks to this venture, a new line of Barbie dolls was produced entirely in India, alongside an Indian version of Hot-Wheels cars.

Among other things, there was also an Indian version of the Heart Family, with the boxes bearing labels of LEO-Mattel.

In 1993 LEO-Mattel begun production of Barbie in India line – Barbies available only in India, dressed in saris.

I found out about their existence in 1994, because one of my friend’s cousins received one as a gift from her travelling uncle!

Pierwsza z serii Barbie in India miała zielone sari, fioletowe oczy, brązowe włosy i brwi wygięte w stylizacji przypominającej indyjskie obrazki. na czole oczywiście bindi. Wygladała jak Europejka ubrana w sari- czyli typowy strój zafascynowanej Indiami turystki. Główkę miała z bardzo miękkiego niskiej klasy winylu, włosy z saranu o cienkich włóknach. Wygladała dokładnie na to czym była … czyli jak produkt z obcego rynku.

The first Barbie in the series wore a green sari, had purple eyes, brown hair, eyebrows arched in a way similar to Indian artworks, and a bindi on her forehead. She looked like a European woman dressed in a sari – like a typical tourist fascinated by India’s culture. Her head was made from a low quality soft vinyl, and the hair was thin saran. She looked exactly like a cheap toy from non-US market.

Pod koniec lat 90s.,  w 1999 roku Mattel zrywa współpracę z BlowPlast, przejmuje całość spółki Leo-Mattel i zaczyna samodzielną działalność w Indiach. Powodem zerwania jest niska jakość produktów wypuszczanych przez BlowPlast.  Seria Barbie in India po przerwie jest kontynuowana-i powstaje do dziś, już siłami samego Mattela. W połowie lat 2000 pojawia się nowa edycja Barbie in India z nowym moldem twarzy i ze stanowczo lepszego plastiku.

At the end of 1990s, in 1999 to be exact, Mattel ends the joint venture with BlowPlast, takes over the ownership of LEO-Mattel and begins an independent presence on the Indian market. The reason for the break up is BlowPlast’s low production quality. The Barbie in India line, after a break, is continued and goes on to this day, under Mattel’s sole ownership. In mid-2000 they release a new version of Barbie in India, with a new face mold and made from much higher quality materials.

Drugą serią produkowaną przez Leo-Mattel jest jeszcze bardziej egoztyczna linia-  Expressions of India- są to Barbie w strojach regionalnych, typowych dla poszczególnych regionów Indii. Lalki ubrane są w autentyczne indyjskie tkaniny- w całości konfekcjonowane w Indiach.

Powstają Roopvati Rajasthani w stroju typowym dla Radzastanu, Mystical Manipuri, Sohni Punjab Di i tak dalej- można je obejrzeć na wspomnianej stronce: http://home.xnet.com/~countzi/sarieoi.html

ja z całego tego bogactwa mam tylko jedną- Roopvati Rajasthani- w czasach przedinternetowych zdobycie jej graniczyło z cudem i wymagalo interwencji sił nadprzyrodzonych:

A second line by LEO-Mattel is the even more exotic Expressions of India – these are Barbies in regional outfits from various parts of the country. The fabrics are authentic and sourced entirely in India.

Among others, there are Roopvati Rajasthani in a typical Rajasthani outfit, Mystical Manipuri, Sohni Punjab Di and many others – you may see them on the aforementioned website: http://home.xnet.com/~countzi/sarieoi.html

Of all those options I have only one of these – Roopvati Rajasthani – buying her was a miracle in the pre-internet days, and required almost divine intervention:

 Moja przyjaciółka, która spędzila w Indiach wiele czasu – ma narzeczonego z Indii, a sama studiowała indologię (fascynujące) – doniosła mi, że materiał tej strojnej kreacji to jeden z najtańszych materiałów na rynku indyjskim – biedne kobiety szyją z takiego swoje sari.

One of my girlfriends who spent a lot of time in India – she’s engaged to an Indian man, and did her studies in Indian culture – told me that the fabric of the doll’s impressive outfit is one of the cheapest ones to be found in India, poor Indian women make their saris from it.

jak wszystkie lalki z tej serii ma metalową biżuterię – biżuteria jest miedziana, co grozi zielonymi plamami, ale oczywiście w wilgotnym indyjskim klimacie zagrożenie jest większe; moja, w zimnej Polsce, trzyma się dobrze 🙂

Like all the dolls from this line she has copper jewellery, which causes green stains. This is a bigger problem in the humid Indian climate, but mine, in cold Poland, is still stain-free.

Guma główki jest w sposób widoczny niskiej jakości- bardzo miękka, o fakturze i jakości spotykanej raczej u podróbek- co daje znowu szalenie interesujący i egzotyczny efekt w zestawieniu z autentycznym Mattelowskim moldem superstar.

The head vinyl is of noticeably lower quality – very soft, with a look and feel found in clones – which gives a highly interesting and exotic effect when paired with an authentic Mattel Superstar mold.

Her nose jewellery is simply an earring, typically worn and found at any Indian market.

Co ciekawe, lalki Barbie in India i Expressions of India, nie są kierowane do indyjskich dzieci – ich głównym odbiorcą są turyści z Europy i Stanow 🙂

Interestingly, the Expressions of India and Barbie in India dolls aren’t promoted as toys for Indian children – their main buyers are tourists from Europe and the USA!

Today, in the age of eBay, it’s easy to purchase these treasures – I highly recommend them!

w zasadzie przypomniało mi to, ze ciagle nie „nadrobiłam” tematu indyjskich lalek- zdobycie ongiś tej jednej zadowoliło mnie na długie lata. A przecież miałam na indyjskiej liście o wiele więcej celów i wiele już bylo okazji sprowadzenia ich sobie. Ale zawsze znajdowaly się pilniejsze kolekcjonerskie potrzeby, zwłaszcza Fashion Royalty bezlitośnie wykańcza konkurencję z listy celów.

I have just realised that my Indian collection has not grown as I may have wished – getting just this one Barbie has satisfied my interest for many years. However, I had lots of other dolls on my Indian list, and I passed on many occasions to buy these. But, somehow always more pressing collectors’ items have taken precedence, especially Fashion Royalty mercilessly pushes out all other candidates.

Te lalki są tak śliczne i inne niż „nasze” europejskie, choćby przez naturalność tkanin i biżuterii ( elementy ludzkich naszyjników i kolczyków są zastosowane dla lalek), że warto się nimi zająć.

The India dolls are so gorgeous and different from „our” European ones – most notably by the authenticity of fabrics and elements of actual human jewellery used in decoration – they are truly worth more attention.
