Po dłuższej przerwie melduje się na blogu- a wszystkich czytelników, którzy daremnie oczekiwali nowego wpisu-przepraszam, że moja absencja była aż tak długa…Życie tym razem-na jakiś czas- wygrało z lalkami, generując dawkę smutkow, depresji, wydarzeń radosnych i mniej radosnych wiekszą, niż zdołałam ogarnąć.

Tymczasem w lalkowym świecie przez ten rok wydarzyło sie również bardzo wiele. Tak dużo nowin i faktów do analizy (niekoniecznie krytycznej)- że…nie sposob rzucić się od razu w wir omowień… Dlatego, gdy teraźniejszosci jest zbyt wiele, znam tylko jeden sposob na relaks-w celach regeneracyjnych cofnijmy się do dalekiej przeszłości.

Wielokrotnie tu na blogu, na lalkowym forum i w rozmowach prywatnych nawiązywałam do serii Mattela  z 1976 roku-Young Sweethearts- wspominałam o Michaelu z tej serii jako o ważnym dostarczycielu moldu artykułowanego Kena (który nadal- choć w formie bardzo przekształconej ma swój udział w najnowszych produkcjach- kościec jest wciąż aktualny)

Nawiązywałam do serii tej jako do oczywistości, tymczasem wiem, że dla wielu czytelników jest to terra incognita. Stąd- czas to nadrobić. Po pierwsze, co to w ogóle za seria?

Zabawa w miłość  

   Michael i Melinda Giftset to zestaw przedstawiający ”zakochaną parę”- słodki jak kartka walentynkowa komplet do zabawy w miłość i zakochanie. Para młodych, którzy mówią o sobie, że stworzeni są dla siebie- romantyczni i sentymentalni do bólu. (Przynajmniej może zaboleć to bardziej cyniczne i zgryzliwe jednostki- zbyt duża dawka słodyczy.) Barbie nigdy nie była tak skora do okazywania uczuć Kenowi. Melinda nie musi kierować się względami Public Relations, podczas gdy Barbie to osoba publiczna i dbała o dyskrecję nawet, gdy wciela się w role piosenkarki rockowej. Nagłe pojawienie się tak jawnie zakochanych lalek wiążę z duchem hippisowskiego uwielbienia miłości pod wszelką postacią- tu w wydaniu sentymanetalno idyllicznym (zapomnijmy o anarchistycznych obliczach epoki- takiego zestawu nikt nie kupi dziecku). Estetyka zestawu natrętnie kojarzy mi się z epoką Hippie i sądzę, że tu nalezy szukać korzeni tej uroczej pary.

Young Sweethearts  z roku 1976- hippisowska idylla  ?

 Polowa lat 70tych to okres hipissowskiej idylli, gdy nowy porządek i ideały pokoju i wolnej milości zadomawiają się na dobre w popkulturze-a przynajmniejw  umysłach wielu młodych ludzi stają sie elementami scenografii, naf ktorymi ci nie zastanawiaja się zbyt wiele. Dorasta generacja dziewczynek, które znają tylko Barbie TNT z 1966 roku ( pierwsza Barbie wraz z całym konserwatyzmem końca lat 50tych jest dla nich już estetycznie i- wręcz kulturowo- obca!) Barbie w mini, Twiggy, długie rzesy i pomalowane w psychodeliczne wzory pokoiki dla lalek to jedyna rzeczywistość, jaką dziewczynki owej epoki znają. 

“Hipisowski” design ówczesnych zabawkowych produkcji staje się oczekiwanym trendem. Barbie (obarczona nadmiarem siostr, kuzynek i historii) wydaje się juz zbyt mało “alternatywna” i postępowa- to czas wiankow we wlosach i marzeń o Edenie na ziemi. Potrzeba czegos jeszcze bardziej na czasie! (jest to zresztą okres regresu serii Barbie, gdy Barbie produkowana jest masowo, bez dbałości o szczególy, najtańszymi srodkami ). I tak oto Mattel w 1976 roku proponuje nową serię, luksusowo wykonaną,  nie związana z Barbie bezposrednio ( unaffiliated to Barbie)- prezentująca parę hippisów idealnych- silny w owym czasie nurt hippisow-romantykow doczekał się tym samym uwiecznienia w świecie lalek.

Seria Young Sweethearts, czyli, w wolnym tłumaczeniu “młodzi pelni słodyczy zakochani”, “Słodkie Serca” to para młodych ludzi- Michael i Melinda, którzy spotykają się w romantycznym parku (do kupienia oddzielnie) pod starym drzewem- i zakochują się. Sceny ich milości (ukazane z tyłu pudełka) to wspólne plecenie wianków kwietnych, noszenie długich spodnic z tej samej tkaniny, co kaftan młodzienca, oswajanie wiewiorek  i czytanie poezji. Cudo, czyż nie?

 Nawet imiona ich maja podobne brzmienie i nie jest to zwykły przypadek, ale zabieg znaczący. Wyobraźcie ch sobie, jak wspólnie wyśpiewują pieśni Joan Baez…

 Ubrani są w zgodne kolorystycznie stroje: łososiowa sukienka dla Melindy + łososiowa koszula dla Michaela.  Oprócz tego koronkowa koszulka Melindy i spodnie Michaela w identycznym kolorze kosci słoniowej. Żywym akcentem jest kamizelka Michalea w kolorze koralowca. Piekne, naturalne odcienie.

Mozna też znaleźć niekiedy rzadszą oboczną wersję w żółtej tonacji: sukienka Melindy oraz koszula Michaela jest żolta (reszta ubrań bez zmian)

 Innowacyjność serii -konstrukcja ciał

 

 

   Barbie konca lat 70tych przezywa okres regresu- wykonywana jest niedbale, na porządku dziennym sa najtansze hollow bodies z nie zginającymi się nogami. Nic nie zapowiada wielkiej odnowy ery Superstar, choc zespół mattela swoje prace wykonuje z dużym wyprzedzeniem, z czego mozna wnosić, że okres najwiekszego zastoju na rynku, to czas intensywnej pracy za kulisami. W czasie zastoju, rok przed wielkim przełomem Barbie Superstar, Mattel angażuje dużą część swoich sił na wykonanie serii, której innowacyjność przerosla pózniejsze rozwiązania. W zasadzie dopiero w 2009, 2010 roku wraz z Fashionistas i Pivotal doczekaliśmy się lalek o podobnym stopniu skomplikowania i innowacyjnosci, co seria Young Sweethearts z 1976 roku-choc nadal niektóre funcje nie występują. Niesamowite, prawda?

Lalki Michael i Melinda sa wzrostu Barbie i Kena (około 11,5 cala), ale posiadaja zupełnie nowe ciała- w pełni artykulowane (nie zapominajmy, wówczas na rynku występują Barbie i Ken ktorzy nawet nie potrafią odginać rąk w bok, nie mówiac juz o zginaniu ich w lokciach- Busy Barbie to piesn przeszłości!) Melinda i Michael nie tylko mają dłonie zginalne w nadgarstkach, ale i stopy w kostkach, mają ruchome kulowe talie,  a nawet ich szyje, oprocz zaczepu kulowego, posiadają dodatkowy mechanizm kiwania sie w bok- innowacja do dzis niespotykana! Ciało Melindy sklada się  w sumie z 16 cześci (podczas gdy współczesna  innowacyjna Pivotal Barbie to 13 części! ) Michael który posiada jeszcze odcięcie w klatce piersiowej -sklada się az z 17 cześci.

 

Ciało Melindy

w swoim kształcie z 1976 roku nie pojawiło się już nigdy w historii Mattela, ale jego fragmenty powracały w swoistym recyclingu części :

1) w  1987 w kosmicznej serii SPECTRA powraca uproszczone ciało Melindy na lalkach Spectra, Stylablue, Ultraviolet, Astragold

2) w 1989 roku powraca sam tors Melindy z uproszczoną szyja w serii Jazzie (połaczony z brzuchem i nogami Starr z 1979 roku)

3)w 1993 uproszczone cialo Melindy daje podstawę artykulowanej Gymnast Barbie – ale tym razem tors Melindy zastąpiony zosytał oryginalnym tosem Barbie z 1966 roku i przez kilkanascie lat powraca jako tzw Pajcykowa Barbie (przy czym płaskie stopy melindy czasem zastępowane są

 stopami z wysokim podbiciem- oryginalne płaskie stopu pajacykowej Barbie to spadek właśnie po Melindzie)

 

Oto Melinda obok standardowej barbie z 76 roku- widać wyraźnie różnice w proporcji główek (Melinda zbliżona jest bardziej do współczesnej Barbie z syndromem BHS czyli z wiekszą główką) i rzuca się w oczy stopień skomplikowania ciał.

Ciało Michaela

jak wspominałam już wiele razy, Michael powraca przez lata w wersji uproszczonej w każdym artykulowanym Kenie ( playline oraz kolekcjonerskim) do 2010 (nowi Kenowie Fashionistas z artykulowanymi nadgarstkami mają (podobno) nowe ciała- wiecej danych, gdy dotrą do Polski. Dodam, ze pierwsza seria Ken Fashionistas ma ciało bazowane na Michaelu)

Pojawy ciała Michaela to :

1) w 1979 roku w serii Starr jako Shaun

2) W 1987 roku  w serii Spectra jako Tom Comet

3) w 1994 jako pierwszy artykuowany Ken Hot Skatin’ Ken

 

Oto Michael obok standardowego Kena z jego epoki- Ken wyglada przy pelnym ekspresji Michaelu jak manekin ze sklepowej wystawy.

 Opis lalek- szczególy

Melinda

Z przodu sukienki Melindy naszyte jest koronkowe serce. Na głowce laleczka ma wianek z plastkowych kwiatków z dwiema wstązkami.

Ma długie lekko pofalowane blond włosy, zamyślona, ufna, romantycznie smutna twarzyczkę, oczy błekitne, łagodne (całkowicie pozbawione Barbiowej fierceness, tej jej kociej kokieteryjności) W swojej koronkowej bluzeczce jest idealnym odwzorowaniem epoki, słodką dziewczyną-wiecznym dzieckiem.

Charaktersytyczną cechą makijażu są niebieskawe białka jej oczu. W drugim egzemplarzy, który posiadam, białka są stanowczo jasniejsze, ale nadal widzę błękitnawy odcień

Jej face mold nie pojawi się już nigdy więcej w historii Mattela- jest jednorazowym przebłyskiem inwencji, to samo dotyczy moldu Michaela.

Jego twarz bardzo blada, z długimi brązowymi prostymi włosami i zamyslonymi brązowymi oczami to ideał męskiej urody owych czasów. Od razu rzuca się w oczy fakt, ze ma on prawdziwe włosy, co w owej epoce jest prawdziwą rzadkością =-pierwszy Ken z rootowanymi włosami pojawił sie w 1972, drugi w 1975- rok poźniej pojawia sie długowlosy Michael w 1976, a dopiero za  kolejne 3 lata doczekamy sie następnego Kena z włosami, czyli Sport&Shave Kena w 1980 roku, a 6 lat pozniej Rockers Kena…przy tysiącach produkowanych moldowanych Kenow z gumowymi włosami okazuje się, że długowłosych nawet w okresie wielkiej mody na męskie długie fryzury bylo bardzo niewielu….  

 

 

 

 

 

Michael a Ken #1- tajemnicze podobieństwo face moldu

Gdy dokładnie przyjrzymy się jego twarzy odkrywamy zadziwiające podobieństwo do androgynicznej urody pierwszego Kena- jakby jakiś ślad rzeźby twarzy pierwszego Kena przetrwał w Michaelu. Tajemnica zaczyna nas jeszcze bardziej nurtować, gdy porównamy Michaela  z  Kenem #2 (molded hair) a następnie z takim na przykład Modern Circle Kenem z 2003 roku, albo  pierwszym Kenem Silkstone. Widzimy wtedy, ze Michael przypomina  Kena #2 (molded) albo Kena silkstone!!!! Porównanie Michaela i pierwszego Kena zdradza nam:

-jak duża róznica jest miedzy Kenem nr 1 i Kenem nr 2

-jak bardzo Modern Circle Ken i Ken silkstone nie przypominają Kena #1, choć opisuje sie ich jako vintage face mold.  Okazuje się, jednoczesnie że  ich twarze mają sporo wspolnego z vintage face moldem..Michaela!  

fascynujące…odkryć po latach, ze mold opisywany jako reprodukcja Kena #1 wcielona w współczesny look Silkstone czy Modern Circle to w istocie trzeci etap, gdzie jakimś przystankiemw drodze od pierwszego Kena był Michael! Coś musi być na rzeczy..być może kształt twrzy pierwszego kena był baza do pracy nad Michaelem…wówczas tak łatwo nie marnowano i nie porzucano moldów- ich produkcja była szalenie droga, wykonywana w postaci rzezby w glinie i pracochłonnych odlewów! Różnica rzuca sie oczy najbardziej w kształcie nosa i podbródka…ale charm pierwszego Kena,w  czarującej postaci młodziutkiego  długowłosego androgyne jest tu wciąz przejmująco żywy! bardziej, niż w sztywniackim Silkstone Kenie, czyz nie?

Czyni to Michaela tym cenniejszym. Rzadki z niego ptak, rara avis, raz tylko objawiony w lalkowym swiecie.

YoungSweethearts Michael and Second Ken (painted hair #2) You can see that Michael has more significant bottom eyelids. Mozna zauważyć, że Michael ma mocniej zarysowane dolne powieki niż Ken nr 2 i ken nr 1. the chin differs also, but there is something they have in common. I don’t know what’s.

After a long break I’m back again – and to all my readers who have been waiting for a new topic – I apologise that my absence was so long… life has – at least for a time – won against the dolls, serving the usual troubles, depressions, happy and not-so-happy events, more than I could handle. 

Meantime in the doll world it was also a busy year. So many news and facts to analise (not necessarily critically), it’s not possible to jump straight into that discussion. And so, when the here-and-now is too much, I know only one way to relax – let’s jump into the distant past.

Many times, on this blog, on the doll forum, and in discussion with other collectors I mentioned the Mattel series from 1976 called Young Sweethearts. Most importantly, I talked about Michael as an important originator of an articulated Ken mold (which is still used in the newest products as a base, although much changed in details).

I spoke of these dolls presuming they were well known, although now I realise they are unknown to many of my readers. So – time for an introduction. First, who exactly are they?

Playing Love

 

Michael and Melinda Giftset is a set features two dolls as a love couple. It is love themed set  sweet as a Valentine card . Young girl and boy who told about themselves that they are “made for each other” – they are sentimental and romantic to degree that a cynic person can’t stand!

Young Sweethearts from 1976 – hippie idyll ?

 

Mid-70s is a time of a hippie idyll, when new order and ideals of peace and free love settle permanently into the pop culture – or at least in the minds of the youths who take these as given. The generation of girls who know only Barbie TNT from 1966 is now growing up(the first Barbie with her conservative late-50s airs is aesthetically – and even culturally – a stranger to them!). Barbie in a mini skirt, Twiggy, long lashes and psychedelically painted doll rooms is the only reality known to these girls. 

 ‘Hippie’ design of the toys from the 1970s becomes an expected trend. Barbie (with her baggage of sisters, cousins and history) is too backwards and not ‘alternative’ enough – now is the time for flowers in your hair and dreams of Eden on earth. Something more up to date is needed! This is also a time of regression for Barbie, she’s produced in large amounts, without attention to detail, with cheapest methods. And so in 1976 Mattel introduces its newest product, of extremely high quality, unaffiliated to Barbie – a pair of ideal hippies – and the fashion for romantic hippies is immortalised with these dolls.

 

The Young Sweethearts are a young couple – Michael and Melinda, who meet at a romantic park (sold separately) under an old tree, and fall in love. Scenes from their relationship (shown on the back of the box) include weaving flower wreaths, wearing matching skirts and vests, playing with squirrels  and reading poetry. Isn’t it wonderful?

Even their names are meant to sound the same and it’s not an accident, but a significant development. Imagine them as they sing the songs of Joan Baez…

The dolls are dressed in matching outfits: salmon-coloured dress for Melinda and the same salmon-coloured shirt for Michael. Also, Melinda has a lacy ivory shirt which matches Michael’s ivory pants. Michael’s vest is coral-coloured. The colours are beautifully natural. A rare version can also be found where Melinda’s dress and Michael’s shirt are yellow, with the rest of the clothing remaining the same.

Innovation – body construction

 

At the end of the 1970s Barbie is suffering from a kind of regression – she is poorly produced, with mostly cheapest hollow bodies and non-bending legs. There is nothing to hint upon the future appearance of Barbie Superstar, although at the same time Mattel’s producers work on designs for the future, which suggests that this regression is also a time of great achievements behind the scenes. During this regression, a year before the huge success of Barbie Superstar, Mattel gets involved with the project which will surpass all future developments. Technically, only in 2009 and 2010 with Fashionistas and Pivotal lines, we got the dolls with a degree of complexity and innovation comparable to the Young Sweethearts from 1976, and even these new dolls lack some of the functionality. Isn’t that amazing?

Melinda and Michael dolls are the same size as Barbie and Ken (about 11.5 inches), but have completely new bodies – fully articulated (don’t forget, Barbies and Kens of that time can’t even move their arms sideways, never mind bending their elbows – Busy Barbie is the song of the past!). Melinda and Michael not only have bendable wrists, but also bendable ankles, ball-jointed waists, and even their necks, aside from the ball joint, can also move side to side – an innovation not seen today! Melinda’s body is made of 16 parts (when the modern innovative Pivotal Barbie has 13 parts!). Michael, who has a mobile chest – is made of 17 parts!

 

Melinda’s body

 in its 1976 incarnation has not been used by Mattel since,  
 
but its elements were recycled in some of the dolls: 

1. in 1987 the space line SPECTRA a simplified Melinda body is used for the Spectra, Stylablue, Ultraviolet, and Astragold dolls

2.      in 1989 the Jazzie line uses Melinda’s upper body with a simplified neck (Jazzie’s middle and legs are taken from the Starr mold from 1979) 

in 1993 a simplified Melinda body is used as a base for the articulated Gymnast Barbie, except for the torso which was the original mold from 1966. This body mold is used for a number of years for many articulated Barbies. Melinda’s flat feet are sometimes substituted with arched feet, but the original flat feet of articulated Barbies are inherited from Melinda

Here’s Melinda compared to the standard 1976 Barbie – the difference in head size is clearly visible (Melinda resembles much more the modern Barbies with bigger heads), and the differences in body design are immediately apparent

   Michael’s Body

As I already mentioned, Michael comes back over the years as a simplified version in every articulated Ken (playline and collectable) up to 2010. New Kens Fashionistas with bendable wrists are supposed to have brand new bodies – I’ll investigate this when they finally reach Poland. It’s worth adding, that the first line of Ken Fashionistas has a body based on Michael’s.

 Michael’s body appears in the following:

1. in the 1979 Shaun line from the Starr series
2. in the 1987 Tom Comet line from the Spectra series
3. in 1994 as the first articulated Hot Skatin’ Ken

Detailed Description

Melinda

A lace hart is sewn onto the front of Melinda’s dress. A wreath of flowers on her head is made of plastic flowers with two ribbons.

She has long, slightly wavy blonde hair, a thoughtful, trusting, romantically sad face, her eyes are baby blue and soft in expression (completely void of Barbie’s fierce and flirty gaze). In her lace blouse she is an ideal image of her era, a sweet girl, forever young.

The bluish whites of her eyes are a distinctive feature of her makeup. Her face mold has never been used by Mattel – it’s a one-of-a-kind invention, this also applies to Michael’s face mold.

Michael

 His very pale face, with long straight brown hair and thoughtful brown eyes, is a reflection of ideal male beauty of his  time.

  Immediately noticeable is his rooted hair, which is very rare at the time – the first Ken with rooted hair appeared in 1972, second in 1975 – Michael appears one year later in 1976 – and not until 3 years later we have Sport&Shave Ken from 1980, and 6 years later Ken from the Rockers… meanwhile thousands of Kens were made with molded rubber hair. It seems there were very few Kens with rooted hair, even when long hair for men was very fashionable…

Michael vs Ken #1 – a mysterious likeness of the face mold

When we carefully look at Michael’s face we discover a surprising likeness to the androgynous look of the first Ken – as if some remnant of Ken’s face was preserved for Michael. This becomes even more intriguing when we compare Michael to Ken #2 (with molded hair), and further with Modern Circle Ken from 2003, or the first Silkstone Ken. We then clearly see that Michael resembles Ken #2 with molded hair or Silkstone Ken!

A comparison between Michael and Ken #1 shows us that:

-         there is a very noticeable difference between Ken #1 and Ken #2

-         that Modern Circle Ken and Silkstone Ken do not resemble Ken #1 very much, although they are usually described as a vintage face mold. At the same time their faces bear similarities to Michael’s vintage face mold!

Fascinating… to discover after all these years, that the mold described as reproduction of Ken #1, used for Silkstone or Modern Circle, is really a third stage of the transformation with Michael being a link to the first Ken! There must be something there… perhaps the shape of first Ken’s face was the basis for Michael’s mold… at that time the molds were not discarded or discontinued as easily as today – their production was very expensive, based on clay sculpts and endless trial samples! The difference in the faces is most noticeable in the noses and chins, although the first  Ken’s androgynous young man charm is very much alive! A lot more than in the stiff Silkstone Ken, don’t you think? This makes Michael all the more rare. He is a rare bird, rara avis making his one and only appearance in the doll world.
